Orchard direct fruit made this basket a winner in the quality department plus the basket itself was beautiful and strong. The Fruit Company's basket included some goodies we always like to see - sparkling cider, pineapple and exotic fruit. The gourmet items were pretty industry standard but the quality was higher than most of the other baskets.
Six Apples - Two Granny Smith, two Red Delicious, two Fuji and one Honeycrisp apple. The apples, what can I say, other than crunchy and sweet. The Honeycrisp was the tastiest in my opinion. The Grannies were tart and firm. All the apples were in good shape and were nice and fresh.
One Navel Orange - This orange had thick skin and sweet flesh. It wasn't as out of control delicious as the citrus we got in the winter from the Florida based companies but this basket was ordered in October so maybe the December baskets The Fruit Company sends have better citrus.
Three Comice Pears and One Asian Pear - The Comice pears were to-die-for good and very beautiful. One pear in particular was full red on one side - absolutely beautiful. The Asian pear in the basket was the Nijisseikii or 20th Century Pear - super popular in Japan. It's skin was yellow-white with white freckles all over its waxy skin. The flesh was very crispy and got more tart the closer you got to the core. The Fruit Comapny actually ships a box of these in their fruit of the month club -they are fabulous and come with one of those cute little sleeves to keep them from bruising. It must have worked since the pear was in perfect shape when we got it.
One Stout Pineapple - The pineapple from The Fruit Comapny was the prettiest pineapple we recevied. The trimmed the top so that there were those raggedy, beat up leaves you see so often on store pineapples. The pineapple had about 2-4 days left to ripen when we got it. We let it get nice and golden and enjoyed its tropical goodness. There is something luxurious about pineapple that makes a basket look really special.
Sparkling Sonoma - Pear-flavored, crisp and bubbly, this cider tastes really really really good when cold. It has effervescent and sweet. The added cider really makes this basket look like you can just take it on a picnic, which we did, at least for the photo shoot.
Chocolate Covered Everything - To say everything is chocolate-covered may not be an accurate descritopn because "chocolate-covered" conjures up images of Willy Wonka and melty gooey milk chocolate drenching anything that will stand still long enough. The "chocolate" that covers fruit found in a lot of these baskets is not creamy milk chocolate - it's waxier and harder and preserves and ships well. They are like Raisinettes. Some people love this kind of chocolate and some people don't. Having said that, the almonds and dried cherries and blueberries in the basket were good underneath their colored chocolate shell.
Cheese and Crackers - The packaging for all these prodcuts was pretty nice - all Fruit Company labels with comissioned watercolor art make it feel very classy, professional. The Honey Wheat Crackers have a darling little bumblebee painted on them and the crackers inside. The crackers were buttery and had that multigrain look and feel. The cheese was from Northwoods Cheese Company and was technically a "pasteurized process cheese food" - very different than what is advertised on their site: Rogue Creamry Garlic Cheddar. The cheese that came was actually pretty good for pasteurized American cheese but felt kind of hokey that Northwoods went to such pains to make it look like it wasn't.
